What Is Sedation?
Sedation is an application often confused with anesthesia. However, there are clear differences between the two of them. Anesthesia makes a person completely sleep and induces loss of consciousness. Anesthesia is the controlled and systematic inducing the patient into a deep sleep. The patient does not feel any pain or does not have any sensations during this time. So when a person is given an anesthetic, they lose touch with reality both physically and mentally and are almost completely unconscious. However, when a person is given sedation they feel drowsy and relaxed but are not unconscious. However, the patient will not feel pain during both procedures. So sedation is some kind of mild anesthesia mostly used for minör surgical operations.
Sedation For Hair Transplant Surgery
A hair transplant procedure is a minimally invasive surgery made with very small incisions if it is the FUE technique used during the procedure. So most patients do not need general anesthesia but they need to be relaxed and comfortable because it still is a medical procedure. You will be given sedated to feel less worried and less anxious. Here are the benefits of sedation during a hair transplant procedure:
- You will not feel pain from the injection of a local anesthetic
- You will feel comfortable and relaxed
- It is easy to use
- Your anxiety levels will drop after its application.
Your scalp will be numbed with a local anesthetic before the hair transplant surgery because the tools used to collect grafts and implant them into the recipient area may cause mild pain. So a local anesthetic will prevent even mild pain from the surgery. A local anesthetic will be injected with a needle so sedation will make you feel comfortable during the injection.
Who Can Receive Sedation?
Sedation is most effective for minor medical procedures such as tooth extraction. Also, children are the best candidates for sedatives because they can be more anxious than adults. However, anyone from any age group can receive sedation whether or not they have a special condition.
However, when it comes to hair transplantation, sedation can be used for those who are allergic to certain anesthetics. It is also effective in alleviating fear and negative emotions for those who experience preoperative anxiety before a surgical operation. So sedation is useful for everyone who needs to be relaxed and comfortable for a medical procedure.
Is Sedation Dangerous?
Sedation is milder than anesthesia, so it is less dangerous with just a few side effects. Thanks to advances in pharmacology, sedatives do not pose serious risks. They are considered to be quite safe and useful. Generally, all of its side effects are mild and temporary. Sedatives are safe as long as they are given at the right dose.
Side Effects Of Sedation
Even though sedatives generally pose just a few risks, some of their side effects may make the patient uncomfortable. They also last only for a few hours following the procedure. Here are some of the side effects of sedation:
- Memory loss about the procedure
- Slowed reflexes
- Low blood pressure
- Feeling kind of ill
Sedatives are classified according to the method of delivery. You can receive a sedative either by mouth, vein, muscle, or mask.
Oral sedatives:You will swallow a pill of diazepam or triazolam. It is easy to use as you do not get conscious about injections.
Intramuscular sedatives: You will get an injection of benzodiazepine into your muscle, probably your butt or arm muscle.
Intravenous sedatives: Intravenous sedatives will be efficiently administered through your vein. You will probably be given midazolam or propofol.
Inhalation: Nitrous oxide will be administered through a mask.
